Greg Westlake
Greg graduated from Blakelock in 2004.
At a very young age, Greg had both his lower legs amputated but that did not stop him from playing the sport he loved - hockey! As he grew into his teens, Greg realized that "stand-up" hockey, which is how sledge hockey players refer to the more familiar game, was not likely to be a realistic career destination. Enter the game of sledge hockey. By the time he was in grade 12, Greg had already been named to Team Canada's sledge hockey team.
In 2006, Greg won a gold medal at the 2006 Winter Paralympics in Turin, Italy. In 2008, he played for Canada again in the International Paralympic Committee's Ice Sledge Hockey World Championships. With nine seconds left in the game, Greg scored the go ahead goal and won another gold medal. The 2010 Paralympics in Vancouver saw the Canadian team finish just out of the medals, in fourth place, but in the 2014 games in Sochi, Russia, great determination and resolve saw Team Canada medal again, coming home with the bronze medal. Greg says that "wearing the jersey and playing hockey for Team Canada is one of the biggest thrills imaginable".
Despite a rigorous training schedule, Greg also found time to complete a degree in liberal arts from the University of Waterloo.
Greg is now training for the 2018 Paralympics in South Korea and he continues to do media interviews and motivational speaking engagements.
